1. Organizational context
Over the past 25 years, from the first International Development Decade, international groups and organizations have implemented or advocated every conceivable strategy offering some promise of counteracting the emergence of a crisis of crises. Whatever the successes, it is widely acknowledged that the basic trend has not been significantly affected.
Corresponding to the contextual challenge in responding to their environments, individuals are faced with an existential challenge in redefining their self-image and the mind-set with which they respond to the world. The following are some of the features of this challenge.
1. Proliferation of explanations and injunctions
Much has been written on the challenge of our times. It could be argued that further statements on the dimensions of the crisis are both repetitive and counter-productive. Specific problems are the topic of frequent media coverage and of reports by bodies of the highest authority. There are also many positive indications that nurture hope that major crises may be averted.
