History

Founded Jan 1947, (Nairobi) Kenya, on the initiative of Louis Leakey, as Pan-African Congress on Prehistory, which was attended by 54 delegates from 27 countries. Name changed: at 4th Congress in 1959, Leopldville (Belgian Congo), to Pan African Congress of Prehistory and Quaternary Studies -- Congrès panafricain de Préhistoire et d'études du Quaternaire; and following the 8th Congress, Sep 1977, Nairobi, to Pan African Association for Prehistory and Related Studies - Association panafricaine pour la préhistoire et les sciences auxilliaires, a name under which it is still currently known.

Aims

Bring together prehistorians, palaeontologists and geologists from all over Africa; provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas; create contacts between students, researchers and practitioners across Africa and in multiple disciplines; forge links and friendships that otherwise would not exist and to facilitate and promote inter-African collaboration.
