History

Statutes adopted 1973; modified 1983. Secretariat located at E-XE8387 - Pan American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center (PAFMDC) of the E-XE3060 - Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Aims

Foster the advance of programs for the control of foot-and-mouth disease establishing, as a final goal, eradication of this disease in South America; assure coordination in formulation, implementation and evaluation, at regional level, of national programs for control of foot-and-mouth disease; further and provide advisory assistance to programs intended for the investigation of foot-and-mouth disease and contribute towards the interchange of results obtained; see that any emergency situation which may eventually affect cattle raising in South America is promptly dealt with further the development of systems for prevention and early detection of any exotic disease in South America, and organization of control programs in case of introduction of any of these diseases; recommend adoption of such measures as are designed to support the international trade of animals and animal products which are related to the problem of foot-and-mouth disease and exotic diseases.
