History

Proposed by D-XD6715 - Association of Interbalkan Women's Cooperation Societies, Thessaloniki (AIWCS), with resolution adopted by 27th General Conference and Memorandum of Understanding concluded between B-XB3383 - UNESCO and AIWCS. Officially declared open 18 May 1994. Originally within the framework of H-XK0527 - UNESCO Mediterranean Programme as a component of U-XK1405 - Network of Mediterranean Women for Cooperation and Parity.

Aims

Establish links of friendship and good understanding among women in countries of the regional through cooperation in common programmes and activities; promote respect of human rights and elimination of all forms of discrimination against women; encourage women's advancement in all sectors, their empowerment and their ever increasing participation in development; support the implementation of the UNESCO strategy aimed at building a culture of peace.
