History

Established following recommendations, 1951, of FAO; the secretariat was supported by the then 'Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux (CAB)', currently CAB International. In 1960, became part of the then H-XH3797 - Commission for Technical Cooperation in Africa South of the Sahara (CTCA), which was transformed in 1965 into the E-XE3028 - African Union Scientific Technical Research Commission (AU STRC). IAPSC was thus legally part of H-XD3027 - Organization of African Unity (OAU). Currently part of D-XD8572 - African Union (AU). Secretariat transferred to Yaoundé (Cameroon) in 1967.

Aims

Advise member states on technical, administrative and legislative measures necessary to prevent the introduction of diseases, pests and other plant enemies in all regions of Africa; improve agricultural production in Africa; train staff involved in agricultural activities in AU member states; initiate and encourage crop pest and disease research; serve as phytosanitary information centre for Africa and as scientific and technical liaison for national, regional and international services.
