History
Established 1957, Geel (Belgium), under the Treaties of Rome (Italy) and as one of 7 the institutes of the E-XE5547 - Joint Research Centre (JRC), under the umbrella of E-XE2442 - European Commission (EC). Commenced operations in 1960 as Central Bureau for Nuclear Measurements (CBNM). Renamed Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements, 1993. Former French title: Institut des mesures et matières de référence. Also known under the acronym IRMM. Registered trademark: 'Confidence in Measurements®'. Ceased to exist, Jul 2016, when merged into structure of JRC.
Aims
Support industrial competitiveness, quality of life, safety and security in the EU by developing advanced measurement standards and providing state-of-the-art scientific advice in the area of measurements and standards for EU policies.
