Founded
2004-12-09 Cusco Peru
History
Established during 3rd South American Summit, by F-XD0055 - Andean Community and F-XF9180 - Southern Common Market, with the addition of Guyana and Suriname, when Cuzco Declaration was signed. Constitutive Treaty signed, 23 May 2008, at 3rd Summit of Heads of State, Brasilia (Brazil). Became effective 30 days after 9th member delivered ratification document, 11 Mar 2011. Expected to include the proposed J-XM3174 - Bank of the South. Apr 2018, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Peru suspended membership; Aug 2018, Colombia withdrew; Brazil and Ecuador withdrew Mar 2019, with Ecuador asking bloc to return Quito headquarters. F-XM8984 - Foro para el Progreso y Desarrollo de América del Sur (PROSUR) was set up, Mar 2019, to counter left-wing direction of UNASUR, when UNASUR was dismantled. 2023, Brazil and Argentina looking to relaunch UNASUR.
Aims
Build, in a participatory and consensual manner, integration and union among peoples in the cultural, social, economic and political fields, prioritizing political dialogue, social policies, education, energy, infrastructure, financing and the environment, among others, with a view to eliminating socio-economic inequality, in order to achieve social inclusion and participation of civil society, to strengthen democracy and reduce asymmetries within the framework of strengthening the sovereignty and independence of the States.

Ministerial and Sectoral Councils (currently 12): South American Defense Council (CDS); South American Council of Health of UNASUR (CSS); Electoral Council of UNASUR (CEU); South American Energy Council of UNASUR (CES); South American Science, Technology and Innovation Council of UNASUR (COSUCTI); South American Council of Culture of UNASUR (CSC); South American Council of Social Development of UNASUR (CSDS); South American Economy and Finance Council of UNASUR (CSEF); South American Education Council of UNASUR (CSE); South American Council of Infrastructure and Planning of UNASUR (COSIPLAN); World Drug Problem Council (CSPMD); South American Council on Safety, Justice and Coordination of Acion against Transnational Organized Crime (DOT). General Secretariat. One country exerts the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Union during one year. Headquarters located in Quito (Ecuador).
