History
Established during the Founding Conference, when 75 States signed the Statutes. Proposed 1990 by D-XD2634 - EUROSOLAR - European Association for Renewable Energy. On 10-11 Apr 2008, representatives of 60 countries met in Berlin (Germany) at the invitation of the German Federal Government to attend the Preparatory Conference for the Foundation of the International Renewable Energy Agency. Final preparatory conference held 23-24 Oct 2008, Madrid (Spain). First Interim Director-General elected, 29 Jun 2009, and headquarters established in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). As of 8 Jul 2010, became a fully fledged international organization.
Aims
Foster and promote large-scale adoption of renewable energy worldwide, specifically in the following areas: improved regulatory frameworks through enhanced policy advice; improvements in transfer technology; progress and improvements in skills and know-how; a scientifically sound information basis through applied policy research; better financing. Support renewable energy projects worldwide so as to prove 100% renewable energy supply is feasible.
