Facilitate contacts between social scientists from different parts of Europe and enhance scientific debate and exchange between them; stimulate European cross-national studies in social sciences. The Vienna (Austria) Centre thus fulfils a dual role: 'Political': promoting cooperation between social scientists from East and West European countries and by doing so contributing to the implementation of the Final Act of Helsinki (Finland) and to international mutual understanding; 'Scientific': stimulating European cross-national studies and thus contributing to the development of theoretical knowledge, the solution of policy problems and the internationalization of social science in numerous ways.
