Founded

1965

History

Established as a regional commission of E-XE0365 - FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa within the framework of B-XB0971 - FAO, by Article XIV of FAO Constitution, at 44th session of FAO Council, under the authority of 11th session of the Conference, 1961, and on the recommendation of a special conference, 1965, Beirut (Lebanon). Agreement for establishment came into force 21 Feb 1967; amended 1977. First session: Feb 1969.

Aims

Carry out measures to control desert locust plagues and reduce crop damage in the Near East region, by: maintaining permanent locust information, reporting and control services; encouraging and supporting training, surveys and research (including maintenance of national desert locust research stations); holding reserves and facilitating storage, export, import and freedom of movement of anti-locust equipment and insecticides.
