1989
History
Established 1989, at a joint meeting of 6 Baltic Islands, subsequently joined by Rügen (Germany). Previously also referred to as Council of the Baltic Islands and as Baltic Sea 7 Islands.
Aims
In general: promote international cooperation on environment, culture, economics and other issues of common interest; develop tourism; sustain economic conditions at large for the wellbeing of island communities in a regional and European context. 'Common Strategy Programme for the Twenty-First Century' aims to: create positive development on the islands through common effort and by taking advantage of the strong development potential in the Baltic Sea area; create a foundation for new job opportunities, sustainable development and mutual enrichment of the islands and the world that surrounds them; revitalize the islands; achieve a positive development spiral; strengthen personal relations and communications among the islands.
