History

28 Aug 1970, Stockholm (Sweden). The roots of the Association go back to the organization of hydrological conferences of the Baltic Sea countries (1926-1938); the series of meetings was broken by the Second World War, and never continued as such after the war. Between 1955 and 1967, five Nordic Conferences of Hydrologists were organized on a 3-year rotational basis between the five Nordic (in sensu stricto) countries. From 1965, the International Hydrological Decade (IHD) was established under the auspices of UNESCO. A coordinating group, NUTSAM, was established between the 5 Nordic IHD committees, which identified a need for organizing a broad water-related forum for exchange of hydrological research results and professional contacts between Nordic hydrologists. Provisional statutes were drafted and discussed at the 6th Nordic Hydrological Conference in Stockholm (Sweden), 1970, which agreed to form the NHF. Statutes formally decided by the General Assembly at the following Conference, Sandefjord (Norway), 1972.
