History
Established on signature of Convention by Heads of State of Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Upper Volta (currently Burkina Faso).
Gambia joined Dec 1973 at meeting of Ministerial Council.
The Convention entered into force 1 Jul 1974.
Convention revised by 11th Conference of the Heads of State and Government, 22 Apr 1994, Praia (Cape Verde), when the Institution was re-structured.
Aims
Research obstacles to achievement of food security and enhanced natural resources management in the Sahel, to better define appropriate strategies and effective policies for sustainable development of the region; coordinate, at the subregional and regional levels, reflection and action to ascertain food, ecological and demographic constraints hampering sustainable economic growth; collect, process and disseminate quantitative and qualitative data to inform and sensitize member states and the international community with regard to ecological and human problems relating to development of the region; contribute to coordination of development, research and training policies implemented to combat the effects of drought and desertification; promote the implementation of activities of subregional, inter-state and regional interests, contributing to strengthening cooperation among member states in their joint efforts to combat effects of drought and desertification, and monitor activities that should contribute to regional integration; contribute to coordination of emergency aid obtained in regional or subregional contexts to promote its use as a factor of development.
