History

20 Sep 1976, Gisenyi (Rwanda), on signature of agreement by Heads of State of member countries, to re-establish on new foundations the traditional economic links which existed prior to the independence of Burundi, Rwanda and Zaire. Amendments to the Agreement: 9 Sep 1977, Bujumbura (Burundi); 7 Dec 1980, Bujumbura; 17 Jun 1984, Bujumbura; 9 Nov 1986, Gbadolite (Zaire). Statutes registered in 'UNTS 1/16748'.

Aims

Bring about economic integration and ensure the security of member States; create a framework for coordination and harmonization in the various areas of social, economic, commercial, scientific, cultural, political, military, financial, technical and touristic developments in the region; promote and intensify commercial exchanges and the free movement of persons and goods; pursue objectives consistent with the United Nations Charter and the Charter of the Organization of African Unity (OAU).
