Founded on entry into force (for a 5-year period) of T-XT6274 - International Coffee Agreement, 1962, registered under 'UNTS 1/9262'.

Operations continued under provisions of: T-XT6874 - International Coffee Agreement, 1968, registered under 'UNTS 1/6791'; International Coffee Agreement 1968 as Extended; T-XT7684 - International Coffee Agreement, 1976, in force from 1 Oct 1976 until 30 Sep 1983; T-XT8296 - International Coffee Agreement, 1982, which entered into force on 1 Oct 1983 and was extended until 30 Sep 1994; T-XT9481 - International Coffee Agreement, 1994, which entered into force on 1 Oct 1994 for 5 years; T-XT0121 - International Coffee Agreement, 2001, which entered into force on 1 Oct 2001 for 6 years; International coffee agreement, 2007, which entered into force on 2 Feb 2011 for 10 years.

Aims

Promote enhanced international cooperation and provide a forum for intergovernmental consultations on coffee matters; facilitate expansion and transparency of international trade in coffee; encourage development of a sustainable coffee economy; promote quality; analyse and advise on the preparation of coffee development projects; promote training and information programmes to assist the transfer of relevant technology to members; act as a centre for the collection, analysis and dissemination and publication of economic and technical information, statistics and studies; encourage and increase the consumption of coffee.

Structure

International Coffee Council -- Conseil international du café (meeting twice a year), the highest authority, comprises all members. Private Sector Consultative Board (meeting 2 times a year) comprises 8 representatives of private sector associations in exporting countries and 8 from associations in importing countries. Executive Director, appointed by Council. Headquarters Agreement with the UK Government accords privileges and immunities to representatives of ICO member countries, ensuring complete independence in the exercise of functions connected with the ICO; members of the staff of the Executive Director thus have privileges and immunities granted by the UK to international organizations.
