History
May 1973, as Office for Sahelian Relief Operations (OSRO), by B-XB0971 - FAO. Expanded, 1 Oct 1975, to respond to requests for emergency assistance in the agricultural and related fields from any part of the world, when known as Office for Special Relief Operations -- Bureau des opérations spéciales de secours. Expanded again in 1996, under the title of Special Relief Operations Service (TCOR) -- Service des opérations spéciales de secours, to include emergency assistance for the control of migratory pests and to liaise with other UN entities, Governments and NGOs regarding humanitarian assistance and emergency matters. Established as a division of FAO, Mar 2002, Emergency Operations and Rehabilitation Division (TCE) -- Division des opérations d'urgence et de la réhabilitation.
Aims
Serve as a focal point for agriculture-related emergency assistance; strengthen links between relief and rehabilitation; respond to requests for assistance in the agricultural, livestock, fisheries and forestry sectors submitted by developing countries affected by exceptional natural or conflict-related emergencies, focusing on restoring livelihoods through re-establishing food production and agricultural activities.
