1986, by the H-XA1752 - International Council for Science (ICSU) General Assembly. Implemented 1987. Ceased to exist, end 2015, with activities partly taken over by F-XJ6881 - Future Earth.
Aims
Study the interactions between biological, chemical and physical processes and human systems; collaborate with other programmes to develop and impart the understanding necessary to respond to global change.

Implemented by U-XE0638 - Scientific Committee for the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (SC-IGBP), which consists of 15 members appointed by ICSU Executive Board, plus Chairpersons of Scientific Steering Committees of the Core Projects. Core Project Offices, with a wide geographic distribution, assist in coordinating the international research effort and ensure implementation of science plans. Core projects are directed by scientific steering committees responsible for detailed planning and implementation. Over 200 scientists are involved in planning and implementing the Programme.
