History

26 Aug 1983, in the framework of E-XF2724 - Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), as ICTP Society of African Physicists and Mathematicians (ISAPAM); formal inauguration 8 Oct 1984, Trieste (Italy) at Pan African Symposium on the State of Physics and Mathematics in Africa. Subsequently changed title into Society of African Physicists and Mathematicians (SAPAM) -- Société africaine de physiciens et de mathématiciens. Current title decided upon 24 Jan 2007, South Africa and relaunched under this title Nov 2009, Dakar (Senegal). Existed under current title since 2000 as an email group. Officially launched 2010, Dakar (Senegal). Registered in accordance with the law of Ghana.

Aims

Promote and further education and research in physical sciences and their applications, so as to enhance technological, economic, social and cultural development in Africa; promote effective contacts and cooperation among African scientists; collaborate with international organizations in furthering scientific activities in Africa.

Structure

General Assembly (every 4 years). Executive Council, consisting of at-large regional representatives (English-speaking West Africa, French-speaking West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa, North Africa, Southern Africa) and representatives from national physics-related professional societies. Officers: President; 2 Vice-Presidents; Secretary-Treasurer. Technical Groups (16). Since 2007, includes E-XJ1876 - African Association of Physics Students (AAPS).
