History
3 Jun 1991, Abuja (Nigeria), during 27th ordinary session of H-XD3027 - Organization of African Unity (OAU), on adoption of T-XT9114 - Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community (Abuja treaty) by Heads of State and Government. The Treaty came into force in May 1994, following its ratification by the required two-thirds of OAU Member States. Regional economic communities consolidating and acting as engines for integration: CENSAD; F-XF1048 - Arab Maghreb Union (AMU); F-XF3162 - Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA); D-XD4308 - Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS); F-XD3462 - Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS); F-XF4199 - Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD); F-XF2522 - Southern African Development Community (SADC). Will be part of the D-XD8572 - African Union (AU), which superseded the OAU in Jul 2002. Not yet operational. Has also been referred to as Continental Common Market.
Aims
Set up a common market built on the regional economic communities; promote economic, social and cultural development and African economic integration so as to increase self-sufficiency and endogenous development; create a framework for development and human and materials mobilization; promote cooperation and development in all aspects of human activity with a view to raising living standards, maintaining economic stability and establishing close and peaceful relations among member states; coordinate and harmonize policies among existing and future economic communities.
