History
1916, Australia, as the Advisory Council of Science and Industry, by the Australian government. 1920, name changed to Institute for Science and Industry. 1926, name changed to Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). 1949, present name adopted. Took over, 1975, research functions of the Commonwealth Forestry and Timber Bureau.
Aims
Serve the Australian community by carrying out research and development in the fields of agriculture, communications and information technology, health, manufacturing and construction, minerals and energy, services, the environment and transport and infrastructure. through outcomes which provide: benefit to Australia's industry and economy, environmental benefit to Australia, social benefit to Australians and support to Australian national and international objectives, through excellence in science and technology and in the provision of advice and services.
