History
20 Aug 1964, Washington DC (USA), as International Telecommunications Satellite Consortium (INTELSAT), by adoption of interim arrangements for a global commercial communications satellite system. First satellite 'Early Bird' launched in 1965. The Consortium was superseded by an organization with the listed title on entry into force, 12 Feb 1973, of definitive agreements: 'the Agreement' (concluded among governments), and 'the Operating Agreement' (concluded among governments or their designated public or private communications entities). Statutes registered in 'UNTS 1/19677'. Intergovernmental organization restructured whereby certain assets, including satellites and orbital filings were transferred to Intelsat Ltd, a commercial company, 18 Jul 2001.
Aims
Act as the supervisory authority of Intelsat Ltd; ensure the performance of Core Principles for provision of international public telecommunications services by satellite, with high reliability and quality; promote international public telecommunications services by satellite to meet the needs of the information and communication society.
