History

Founded at the Olympic Games, by a committee appointed to work out proposals for rules and statutes of an international federation to comprise wrestling, weightlifting, tug-of-war, throwing events and shot-putting. Reconstituted 1921, Lausanne (Switzerland). First printed Rules, 1937. New Rules adopted in 1950, Stockholm. Most recent edition of Rules: 2003.

Aims

Encourage development of all wrestling styles (Greco-Roman, freestyle, women's, traditional, grappling, belt wrestling, Pankration Athlima, etc); promote the sport in all countries; bring support and technical assistance to developing countries; contribute to development of friendly relations among all wrestlers and between national federations; establish and distribute international rules for different wrestling styles; exercise control over wrestling throughout affiliated national federations and associate members; supervise application of wrestling rules and regulations at Olympic Games, world championships, world cups, continental competitions and all international events held under FILA control; designate, select, train, improve and coordinate international referees; represent the sport and protect interests at the International Olympic Committee and at other meetings; arbitrate and take all necessary decisions in any case of litigation or disputes arising between national federations.
