History
Nov 1988, following a workshop, Mar 1986, Ibadan (Nigeria), organized by E-XE4109 - International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), U-XE4624 - International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA) and E-XD6784 - World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), as a research and development network. Also referred to as Alley-Farming Network for Africa.
Aims
Promote basic and applied research on alley farming - food biased agroforestry - within national research institutions, and link the research efforts with development activities, for the assessment of the system's potential for the adoption by farmers. 'Specific objectives': (i) Assist National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) in the development of their alley farming research programs; (ii) assist in the training of NARS scientists to raise their capacity and expertise in conducting alley farming research; (iii) coordinate research and development efforts among NARS through information exchange mechanisms, and create collaborative linkages with International Agricultural Research Centres (IARCs) and other relevant agencies; (iv) assist, where possible, in the acquisition of funds for implementing the alley farming (research and development) programs in NARS.

Assembly of members. Steering Committee, consisting of 8 representatives from NARS, a representative each from IITA, ILCA and ICRAF, plus the Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator. Donor agencies have observer status on the Steering Committee. Coordination Unit (CU), comprising Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator and a small secretariat. General administration support in relation to the operations of CU at IITA and to its links with national programs are provided by IITA Administration and International Cooperation Division.
