History
Founded Sep 1985, Tikal (Guatemala), for the purpose of information, cooperation and consultations; decisions have the nature of recommendations. Also referred to as Association of Central American and Caribbean Electoral Organizations. Constitution changed, 16 Jul 1999.
Aims
Encourage international cooperation in order to promote representative democracy, and the free, universal and secret vote; promote effective political participation by means of efficient and clean electoral systems in their respective countries; encourage reciprocal consultations on any matters related to the electoral process, as well as exchange of information about the same and about the development of elections, within the framework of horizontal cooperation; foster electoral observation with the participation of member organizations, with the invitation of host country which will offer the necessary facilities; make recommendations of a technical nature about such matters; foster mutual support between the Electoral Organizations, independent of whether or not they are in an electoral period.
