History
Founded on initiative of the then 'International Missionary Council (IMC)', now U-XE1807 - Commission on World Mission and Evangelism of the World Council of Churches (CWME). Constitutional Assembly: Apr 1963, Kampala (Uganda).
Aims
Keep before Churches and national Christian councils the demands of the Gospel on their life and mission, for unity, for evangelism and for their witness and service in society; to this end, promote consultation and action among them; stimulate and promote common programmes, research and experimentation so as to assist Churches, national Christian councils, theological institutions, lay training centres and Christian student organizations in interpreting and responding to the decisive action of God in Jesus Christ in terms of Africa's culture, experience and needs; provide for programmes of study and research to encourage Africa's contribution to worldwide Christian thought, worship and action; assist Churches in finding, training and placing personnel and utilizing other resources for effective pursuit of their common task and in their common work of lay and clerical leadership development for common responsibility in liberation, justice, peace, reconciliation, human development and integrity of creation; act as a regional point of reference in worldwide fellowship of the Christian Church and promote cooperation and coordination with agencies of the World Council of Churches, of the Roman Catholic Church and of similar bodies as mutually agreed.
