Founded
1988
History
1988, under the aegis of H-XD9682 - Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC), as SADCC Regional Gene Bank – SADCC Banco Regional de Genes, as a 20-year joint Nordic development project with F-XF8187 - Nordic Genetic Resource Centre (NordGen). Subsequently, name changed to SADC Regional Gene Bank (SRGB) – SADC Banco Regional de Genes, known also as Regional Gene Bank for Plant Genetic Resources. Present name adopted in Oct 1993. Second phase (1994-1997); 3rd phase (1999-2003); 4th phase (2003-2007); 5th phase (2008-2013). Now fully integrated within the Food Agriculture and Natural Resources (FANR) Directorate of F-XF2522 - Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Aims
Promote and coordinate a regional network for plant genetic resources management through national centres of SADC Member States; train specialists; develop national plant genetic resource management programmes; prevent erosion and loss of regional genetic resources through collection and preservation efforts.

Organized under SADC Food Agriculture and Natural Resources Directorate. Board, comprising Chairman and 15 members representing each SADC member state. Institutional building in Zambia houses Administrative and Financial Sections, 3 Technical Sections, Gene Bank, herbarium and field gene bank, and is expected to include a biotechnology laboratory.
