2000

History

Established following E-XE3376 - United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions 1291 and 1304, which called for an international conference.

Secretariat set up 2000, under the umbrella of A-XA3375 - United Nations (UN) and D-XD8572 - African Union (AU).

Eleven Heads of State and Government adopted Declaration of Peace, Security and Development in the Great Lakes Region, Nov 2004, Dar es Salaam (Tanzania UR).

Pact on Security Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region signed 2006, Nairobi (Kenya), when preparatory phase ended and implementation period began.

Executive Secretariat inaugurated May 2007, Bujumbura (Burundi).

Aims

Be an effective and dynamic institution which coordinates, facilitates, monitors and ensures implementation of the Pact and other initiatives, so as to attain peace, security, stability and development in the Great Lakes Region.
