History
Established on acceptance of a draft agreement presented at Conference of B-XB0971 - FAO, following: recommendations, 1989, Rome, of a technical conference; opening for signature, 19 Jun 1991, of Convention establishing H-XD4141 - Western Indian Ocean Tuna Organization; proposal at Diplomatic Conference, Jun 1992. Agreement came into force on acceptance by 10 states, 27 Mar 1996. Established under Article XIV of the FAO constitutions, establishment having been assisted in particular by U-XF2613 - Tuna Fisheries Development and Management in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific off Southeast Asia (IPTP). First session: 21-24 Mar 1997.
Aims
Manage tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean and adjacent seas by promoting cooperation among Members with a view to ensuring, through appropriate management, conservation and optimum utilization of stocks covered by the Agreement and encouraging sustainable development of fisheries based on such stocks.
