History
1913, Ghent (Belgium). Revised Constitution adopted 24 Jun 1963; further amended: 24 Jun 1981; 11 Mar 1982; Sep 1995. Registered in accordance with Belgian law. Also referred to in Spanish as Unión Internacional de Municipios y Poderes Locales. Merged with H-XB3391 - World Federation of United Cities (UTO) to form B-XF6714 - World Organization of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), May 2004.
Aims
Promote local government as a cornerstone of democracy; represent and defend the interests of local government at the national and international level; foster improvement in the quality of local decision-making, administration and service provision; strengthen local government and its institutions as instruments for socio-economic development, with special emphasis on national associations; promote and encourage international information exchange and cooperation between local governments.
