8 May 1997, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), ECA Subregional Development Centre for Eastern Africa (EA/SRDC Kigali) -- CEA Centre de développement sous-régional pour l'Afrique de l'Est (CDSR/AE), within the framework of E-XE4174 - United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), under Resolution 828 (XXXII) of the 32nd Session (23rd meeting) of the ECA Conference of Ministers, as one of 5 subregional centres with the task of achieving the objectives of F-XF2245 - African Economic Community (AEC) as defined by T-XT9114 - Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community (Abuja treaty). Derives from Multinational Programming and Operational Centre, UNECA/MULPOC, Gisenyi (MULPOC, Gisenyi) -- Centre multinational de programmation et d'éxécution de projets, MULPOC/CEA, Gisenyi, set up Oct 1977, to cover the countries of F-XF5516 - Communauté économique des pays des Grands Lacs (CEPGL) as one of 5 'MULPOCs', replacing the subregional offices and the 3 U-XU0264 - United Nations Development Advisory Teams (UNDATS) under Resolution 311 (XIII) of the 4th meeting of ECA Conference of Ministers. The 'MULPOCS' constituted the operational field arm of UN/ECA and were all transformed into ECA Subregional Development Centres (UNECA/SRDCs) under the same Resolution. Also referred to by the initials UNECA/SDRC-EA -- CEA/CDSR-AE.
Aims
Assist the East African subregional economic community to promote and strengthen the subregional economic integration process and achieve the objectives of the African Economic Community; provide support strategies and programmes for the enhancement of economic development in areas of macro economic policy, trade, industry, agriculture, food security, population, transport and communications and gender; promote institutional economic cooperation and integration.
