History

Established at Founding Conference, held in furtherance of the recommendation adopted by the 6th Session of the Islamic Commission for Economic, Cultural and Social Affairs, Nov 1980, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). Organization creation plan developed over a period of four years (1978-1981): recommendation in Resolution No 9/9-C during the 9th K-XF4192 - Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM), 24-28 apr 1978, Dakar (Senegal); recommendation confirmed during the 10th CFM, 8-12 May 1979, Fez; resolution and ratification of Statutes (Charter) by virtue of resolution No 2/11-C of the 11th CFM, 17-22 May 1980, Islamabad (Pakistan); final resolution at 3rd F-XF4974 - Islamic Summit of Kings and Heads of States and Governments, 25-28 Jan 1981, Makkah Al-Mukarramah (Saudi Arabia). A specialized organ of C-XC4129 - Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Aims

Strengthen, promote and consolidate cooperation among member states in the fields of education, science, culture and communication; develop and upgrade these fields within the framework of the civilizational reference of the Islamic world and in light of human Islamic values and ideals; consolidate understanding among peoples within and outside member states; contribute to the achievement of world peace and security, particularly through education, science, culture and communication; publicize the correct image of Islam and Islamic culture; promote dialogue among civilizations, cultures and religions; work towards spreading the values of justice and peace and the principles of freedom and human rights, in accordance with the Islamic civilizational perspective; encourage cultural interaction and support cultural diversity in member states, while preserving their cultural identity and protecting independence of thought; consolidate complementarity and coordination among the specialized institutions of the OIC in education, science, culture and communication, and among member states, and promote cooperation and partnership with similar governmental and nongovernmental institutions sharing the same interest, within and outside member states; increase interest in Islamic culture, highlight its specificities and publicize its landmarks in intellectual studies, scientific research and educational curricula; work to establish complementarity and correlation among educational systems of member states; support the efforts of educational, scientific and cultural institutions for Muslims in non-member states.
