| | | | | | | Excellence in Association Management: ASSOCIATIONWORLD’s new approach to education for association leaders | | By: Kai Troll, ASSOCIATIONWORLD President and CEO. When looking at education for associations, it quickly becomes apparent that the available options are limited. While large associations are being targeted, smaller organizations can often fall by the wayside. Additionally, there is a shortage of educational programs which spend a significant amount of time on a single topic, allowing for real progress to be achieved by the participants.

| | | | | UIA Yearbook highlights UN Sustainable Development Goals Sustainability. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 global goals which cover social and economic development issues, and are set by the United Nations General Assembly, and involving the entire United Nations System. There can be no question as to the relevance of the topic. The SDGs are informed by and in turn inform all global civil society actors. The new Yearbook of International Organizations Volume 6 on Global Civil Society and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals looks at the link between these international associations and the SDGs. Which of the SDGs concern them? With which SDGs should they be concerned? What communities of international bodies form around each of the SDGs? By producing this innovative Yearbook Volume, the UIA is putting its extensive research and information capacities at the further service of the global civil society community and of the UN System, contributing thus in its specialist domain to the broader implementation of the SDGs. Or that 87% of international associations meetings have less than 1000 participants? These are just some of the insights shared in the report of the 2018 Survey on International Meeting Issues. The 2018 edition follows surveys undertaken on behalf of UIA’s Associate Members in 1985, 1993, 2002, 2009, 2013 and 2015. With the aid of its sponsors Seoul Tourism Organization, Singapore Tourism Board and Monaco Convention Bureau, UIA was able to reach an even greater number of associations for 2018. The complete report can be freely consulted at w w w. uia. org/publications/meetings-survey.

| | | | | | | By Stephanie Kröter, Marketing Manager Conventions, Munich Convention Bureau Did you know, that…? + The Munich Metropolitan Region is one of Europe’s leading economic regions with many topnotch German and international companies. That combined with excellent higher education and research facilities – Munich is Germany’s second largest university hub – results in intriguing knowledge clusters (e.g. in the areas of medicine and life sciences, insurance and banking, automotive, aerospace, science and research, IT and communication, culture and design) beneficial to the MICE sector. Thus, in 2018, Munich hosted numerous outstanding medical congresses such as the European Society of Cardiology Congress (ESC 2018, 32,800 attendees) and the Congress of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO 2018, 28,000 attendees) ...

| | | | | Duck’s breast not gestures |
By: Christian Boergen, Editor, CIM Conference & Incentive Management The interests of international organisations may differ but the problems they face are often the same. UIA Round Table Europe encourages experience-sharing. Hungry. Marc Boissieux’s gala dinner on a 2,000-year-old Roman mosaic in Lyon’s Lugdunum Museum will not be so easily forgotten by the 127 attendees of the UIA Round Table: The taste of duck’s breast with aubergine confit, roasted pear and potato waffles was simply too delicious. The hosts certainly lived up to their reputation as the French gourmet capital on 15 and 16 November 2018. Whether their focus is on peace or the environment, sports or business, associations often have to grapple with the same everyday problems. This makes them all the keener to share their experiences at the Round Tables of the Union of International Associations (UIA), and not just at dinner. At Lyon Convention Centre on the banks of the Rhône, representatives of 96 associations from 27 countries discussed the role of international organisations ...Read More
